BREEDS OF CHICKENS

by: Jo Ann Weaver

I would like to tell you how I got started with my fowls. I had never thought about having birds of any kind, though my mom had chickens when I was very little. We live back in the woods and only had two dogs and a cat.

My German Shepherd dog loved to chase the squirrels and rabbits around us. One day I heard her barking and looked out to see her chasing a big white bird that took off flying into the bushes. I excitedly told my husband, I don't know what kind of bird it was, but it was as big as a chicken! A few days later, my hubby came in laughing. He said, not only is it as big as a chicken, it is a chicken! It was a white banty rooster. No one around us had chickens and I still don't know where he came from. We taught our shepherd not to chase him and he moved in. We called him Bob.

Every morning we enjoyed Bob's crowing. We had some hound dogs in a fenced in lot. There was a cinder block right up against the outside of their fence and this is where Bob decided to roost. I soon had a hound expecting puppies and moved her to our kennel building. Here she spent most of her time in the building but had access to a fenced lot through a doggie door. Because she was mostly inside with the puppies, Bob started flying into the lot and eating stray bits of her dog food. Once or twice when I went to feed her, he was in the lot when she came out and I had to quickly grab her and run him out.

One morning when I went to feed the dogs, the lot was absolutely covered in something white. As I got closer I saw it was feathers! Oh my God, she has killed Bob I thought. As I came up to the fence I heard a noise. There was Bob running around the fence trying to get out and I swear he didn't have a whole feather left on his body! I have never seen such a sight, a chicken plucked alive! I got him out and he ran away, but I guess the shock got him. Poor Bob was dead the next morning.

Well my hubby told the story where he works and how upset I was about Bob. A guy there who had chickens sent me a hen and rooster. We had to keep them in a dog crate while we quickly slapped together a coop and run for them. That was the start of the fever. A year later we had four buildings and five lots holding standard chickens, banties, turkeys, guineas and peacocks. Now we also have ducks and even a pair of Zebra Finches in the house.

And it all started with one stray banty rooster! I always have one roo named Bob. I will never forget him [or should that be forgive him,
