I am now 39 years old. When I was a child, I would cry my heart out at any sight of an animal in distress - I adored and yet dreaded "Mutual Of Omaha's Wild Kingdom". Every time a predator killed some animal I'd have a fit! My parents just shook their heads.
It always bothered me to eat meat, yet, I loved the stuff and wasn't willing to give it up. I'd just ignore the realities of the entire process to get that meal on my plate. I was born and raised, for 19 years, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada's largest city. At the age of 19 I moved into the country. Reality really hit me hard at this time. I had never encountered so many situations with wild animals being hurt/dying/eaten. Especially the carnage on the roads. Slowly, over time, I got to know quite a few farming families and was gradually exposed to the hard choices of animal husbandry. Boy, did I ever hate the way the system worked in farming. I felt sorry about the animals being cooped up, etc., etc. The patient farmers carefully explained the reasons why things were done the way they were. After a while a lot of it made sense to me. But I still felt it was important to acknowledge to the farm creatures that I was very appreciative of the food they give to all of us. This led me to do research on food rituals of many different, past and present, cultures around the world. The Native American aboriginal approach to food made sense to me. After all we are all connected in that big circle of life, we are all brothers and sisters, we all depend on mother earth and the bounties she provides in order for us all to survive. Hence the thanking to the animals' spirits for their lives. Sounds like a lot of hippy hogwash eh! Later on I realized that factory farming was becoming a new way of life and I hated it. I felt so sorry for all the livestock who live such meaningless lives for the soul purpose of feeding humans. Because of this, my husband and I decided to take a more active approach to our food supply. We started to raise chickens, giving them the best and most spoiled a life as possible, before we they complete the circle of life them. There is never quite an awakening as to how much food in this country is wasted until you witness the killing of the livestock you eat. From then on we never wasted meat, we now considered it a sin for others to do so. After all, an actual breathing creature was "snuffed" in order for us to enjoy their flesh. When I think about it we can be such devilish creatures! Now instead of looking at a chicken and feeling sorry for it 'cause it's going to die to feed me, I remember that every single second on this earth, some kind of living creature is being killed in order to feed another. And I've gotten to the point that I feel this is the natural order of things. |
